Winter's
Bone (15), 2010, USA, Director: Debra Granik, 100 mins
A naturalistic drama, set in the Ozark mountains of Missouri. A
teenager is faced with the daunting task of resolving the disappearance
of her father in order to keep the family home for her sister, brother
and depressed mother. This is not an easy task in a harsh, insular
environment where her kinsfolk are just as ready to turn on her
as help her. Underscored with country music, to emphasise the melancholic
and brutal world in which she lives.

An epic film in every sense which spans some 50 or 60 years, from
the late 1920s until the 1980s, in the lives of three generations
of a peasant family in the Sicilian town of Bagheria. It's about
love, marriage, growing up and growing old, the weight of tradition

from the director of the highly acclaimed Cinema Paradiso together
with a soaring soundtrack by Ennio Morricone.

Submarine
(15), 2010, UK/USA, Director: Richard Ayoade, 97 mins
An acutely observed
British tragic-comedy of the horrors of being a self-loathing 15
year old who fancies an unattractive classmate, on the premise that
he'll be in with a better chance of success. At the same time he's
trying to stop his mother leaving his father for her dance teacher.
A gem of a film, full of sly observations about the problems of
alienation.

From
our Chairman
There
are three great reasons to be a member of TPH for the coming season.
1) Yet
again prices have been frozen and remain at just £30 for a season
of 11 films.
2) We
have an exciting new venue, the Cossham Hall, for our screenings - smaller,
more intimate and more comfortable, we also project from an overhead gallery
for the traditional cinema feeling. The intimate space will mean a greater
restriction on numbers attending so membership is the only way to guarantee
your seat.
3) A
feast of world cinema, with absorbing tales from France, Italy, Belgium/Russia,
Denmark, USA, Argentina/Spain and UK
Patrons
who are not TPH members are very welcome under our screening licence,
so if you think a friend may be interested in just one or two films then
please encourage them along, they can buy a ticket on the night, if there
are seats available, for just £5.00 at the desk.
We look
forward to your company and an enjoyable season, at a screen near you!

Warren
Chair,
